More on The NCGOP: ‘they’re out of touch with reality and the Republican Party’
Written by YellowJacket on April 25th, 2008…So says John McCain.
Uh, seriously? What about the ad Sam posted below is inappropriate or even stretches the facts of the race or Obama’s relationship with his nutcase minister?

The key line of the story: “‘They’re not listening to me because they’re out of touch with reality and the Republican Party. We are the party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan and this kind of campaigning is unacceptable,’ McCain told NBC’s “Today” Show.”
Fits into the positive campaign rhetoric. Trying to tie himself to past presidents most Americans have a level of respect for instead of the negative wedge issue politics of Bush and Rove.

Mike Huckabee has come out saying that just because Obama’s pastor said something doesn’t mean that Obama agrees with him. While I know that many on this blog, including myself, take issue with lots of things about Huckabee, if there’s one thing he knows a lot about, it’s crazy pastors.

McCain has repeatedly indicated that he wants to campaign on policy issues. While the ad may be accurate, it is an ad hominem attack rather than a policy issue.
Are you really that scared of having a campaign that’s based on issues? I think you know that if you actually campaigned on your signature substantive issues, you’d lose every election by 40 points. Better to get votes by turning up the racist rhetoric.
This is yet another demonstration of the failure of your id and ego to properly split when you were younger, probably because of poor parenting. As I pointed out on another thread, you have repeatedly demonstrated that you are unable to consider any idea in the abstract outside of the paradigm of your own opinion sphere.

Wow! I am apparently a “racist” who can’t get over the inability for my “id and ego to properly split” when I was younger!
Publius, you never cease to amaze me. Just when I think that you can’t possibly jump over the next hurdle to unconscionable ignorance, you leap over it.
I’ll be sure to tell my great parents what you think about them, though. Thanks for informing me of my apparently poor upbringing and racist background.
You expect to be taken seriously here?!? Give me a break.

AM
By the way I am not scared of any campaign the McCain camp plans, because I do not support the man. I made my feelings clear with my comment about the post that Mike stole the words out of my mouth.
With McCain we get ridiculous “global warming” legislation such as McCain-Lieberman, immigration legislation such as McCain-Kennedy, anti-free speech legislation such as McCain-Feingold, and even class warfare rhetoric against tax cuts. Why would I support him when people like you should support him based on the issues? After all, you claim (rightfully!) that issues are so imperative…
27
AM
I never said you were racist, just that republicans tend to win close elections by amping up the racial rhetoric. Look at how Harold Ford got lynched!
The ego/id comment was about your criticism of McCain for decrying such an ad, despite the fact that you have repeatedly bemoaned failure of candidates to campaign on substantive issues. But I guess this only applies to Democrats.
Just out of curiosity, for whom do you intend to vote? If it’s Obama and McCain, I’ll probably just sit this one out myself.

“I never said you were racist”
Right, you just wrote whatever it took to imply that I am without actually saying it.
On the issues Barack Obama (and his minister) are waaay outside of the mainstream political thought of most North Carolinians and Americans, so again I don’t see the ad as running away from the issues.
And I fail to see how in a matchup between Jeremiah Wright and Republicans, somehow the Republicans come out as the racist ones in your twisted logic. Do you ever actually pay attention to the substance of issues or do you just love bombthrowing without reason?

Speaking of crazy people (I am referring to Reverend Wright, not either of you), I get to meet and ask questions to Ron Paul on Friday. Any thoughts on what I should ask him? I’m thinking that “What is wrong with you?” is probably not appropriate…
27
PM
I’d ask him how he interprets the fact that in the GOP primary in PA, he and Huckabee got 25% of the votes, despite McCain’s nomination being all but a sure thing…

PM
Wow, Ive been away for a few days, and just caught the “id and ego split” thing. Of course, I am a fan of bare knuckles debating, but Ill point out that the term “ad hominem attack” appears in the same entry, and that is simply ironic.

Ironic might not be a strong enough word. Perhaps what you’re searching for is “Hypocritical”. See, I criticize stupid name calling when liberals do it, as well. I’m an equal opportunity cry-baby.
And Becky, Ron Paul did so well in Western Pennsylvania for a simple reason- he’s from there. We Pittsburghers like a local kid.

“This is yet another demonstration of the failure of your id and ego to properly split when you were younger, probably because of poor parenting.”
Publius that’s enough. Langley is quite capable of taking care of himself against a pseudo-intellectual like you, but it is another thing for you to insult his parents, both of whom are very good people and friends of mine.
You make one more embarrassing, dim-witted comment like that and you’re gone forever. Capesci?

This blog has banned me “permanently” on multiple occasions in the past! And I never said anything about anyone’s parents — Improve your reading comprehension skills.
Call me whatever names you want. You come up with a way to make $118,000 tax-free with free housing/utilities by working 10 hours a week for 8 months a year, then call me an idiot. I’m more successful than you are and more successful than the ceiling of your own intellect ever will allow you to be.
Was it not you who, just two months ago, claimed that McCain’s poll numbers would be in free-fall and that there would be some massive desertion of conservatives? Also, was it not you who ascribed unequivocal truth to some website that my cat could have made in FrontPage about John McCain’s military record?
You can be a big bad man and ban me if you want. I’ll continue competing with words. I assume you’ll compete by bullying when you decide that you can’t manage yourself otherwise. We all know that the biggest bullies have the smallest penises (metaphorically?).

I just remembered that Mike previously threatened to ban a fellow conservative after Mike called him names and said conservative responded with more names that apparently hurt Mike’s feelings.
There seems to be a pattern here — I thought “I’m gonna take my ball and go home!” went out of style in 5th grade for most people?

“This blog has banned me “permanently” on multiple occasions in the past!”
Clearly we have not.
“And I never said anything about anyone’s parents — Improve your reading comprehension skills.”
Publius: “This is yet another demonstration of the failure of your id and ego to properly split when you were younger, probably because of poor parenting.”
You are right, you said nothing about Langley’s parents nor their skills at raising him into the exceptional man he is today.
“We all know that the biggest bullies have the smallest penises (metaphorically?).”
I am sure you would like to know.
Look this is really very simple: you are annoying, unintelligent and childish. I don’t like you here because you poison all discussion with your very presence. I will allow you to stay however if can you can follow some simple rules, such as not being insufferably rude, limiting your discussion to issues and not the other bloggers family, and finally please attempt to rein in your massive ego.
If you can agree to these terms I won’t ban you, if you can’t agree to these terms (which I honestly hope you don’t) then I will be forced to ask you to grace the world with your wisdom elsewhere in the blogosphere.
If you choose to respond to this please keep the dime store psychoanalysis to yourself. I admire your work Dr. Freud but see if you can communicate as a functional adult for a change.

The previous post speaks for itself. Mike proposes to ban me and other posters for personal attacks? This is sort of like campus security guards and secretaries at high schools: people with very little power enjoy wielding around what little power they have in obnoxious ways. Note that the people who actually contribute substantive material to this blog (e.g. Langley and Sam) don’t even do this.
Admittedly, I do make personal attacks from time to time, but the hypocrisy in your post would be obvious even to a blind deafmute.
Also, you called me unintelligent. I again challenge you to any objective measure of intelligence. What did you get on the SAT or GRE? I wouldn’t bring this up except for your allegation. Put up or shut up on this matter.
Nevertheless, I’m willing to try dispensing with the ad hominem attacks for awhile — only to prove to you that the causality of personal attacks runs in the other direction on this blog, a fact that you’re apparently blind to.

“You come up with a way to make $118,000 tax-free with free housing/utilities by working 10 hours a week for 8 months a year, then call me an idiot.” Woooooow! Must have been that stellar Pine Tree high school you went to!

Ha! I certainly credit my high school more than my undergraduate education, that’s for sure. And the latter was privatized!

As long as you behave yourself feel free to talk about whatever you wish.
I won’t be having any discussions with you for exactly the same reasons I don’t talk about serious matters with a three year old. As for hypocrisy, I am allowed to be rude to you (as few merit it more), but not you to me. This is not a democracy.
Remember, behave I won’t warn you next time.

“I am allowed to be rude to you, but not you to me.”
“behave I won’t warn you next time”
“You make one more embarrassing, dim-witted comment like that and you’re gone forever. Capesci?”
Why do the actual contributors to this blog (e.g. Langley, Sam and Mark) allow Mike to behave like this? It degrades the substantive material that you do post to allow a “moderator” who does not ever post substantive material himself, but repeatedly uses his capacity as an admin to hurl insults and then threaten commenters when they insult back.
The people who actually run this blog should be disgusted.
29
AM
Well I am sorry you feel that way, but you should know the only reason the last four or five of your comments are even appearing here are because I approved them. Your comments have been flagged for quite a while in moderation. You can go back to being smarter than everyone else now, just remember to keep it civil please.
BTW, I figured out the answer to your query:
“You come up with a way to make $118,000 tax-free with free housing/utilities by working 10 hours a week for 8 months a year, then call me an idiot.”
Clearly this is an academic job but not in the United States, no one would hire a guy like you fresh out of college with only an economics degree and no real published work for that amount of money.
I am guessing the American University of Sharjah hired you Mike, though the irony of a marxist like you being employed in a capitalistic place like the United Arab Emirates is fairly rich. Their take on minority rights, homosexual rights, gender equality or “living wages” doesn’t seem to get in the way of you taking their cash though does it?
I won’t call you an idiot then, but some other words come to mind.

AM
Mike….My years of experience in the academic world immediately led me to believe that Publius was some 2nd rate lecturer or adjunct professor, bitter that he was never accepted by people who really achieved something. The attitude he has just screams “why cant I be in the tenure stream?!”…..Man, academics that act like three year olds are a dime a dozen. They should get a new act.
29
AM
Tell me about it. I deal with pompous academics everyday. A colleague puts it this way. They are educated beyond their own comprehension.
29
AM
Well, I cant agree with that since I have a phd, but the academic field is a magnet for childish men.
29
AM
Wow, your conjectures couldn’t be further off-base.
I actually received two tenure-track offers in the US and an offer from the DOJ (antitrust division). If you think I’m lying, I’ll be happy to scan the letters of intent.
I turned all three of these down to accept a tenure-track position here (so your assumption is incorrect) because I’m a greedy capitalist. As Mike correctly points out, starting faculty salaries in econ are around 90, and I’m doing much better here, especially with no taxes on the first 85K.
Some things are better here: effectively unlimited research budgets, an infinitely elastic supply of RA hours, low teaching loads and students who behave better than American undergraduates.
29
AM
No, just like I am not going to ban you for being merely rude in virtually everyone of your posts since you first showed up here.
As I said, this isn’t a democracy. The only reason Dave is being rude is because you have such a long and distinguished track record of being . . . prickly. Look at his other comments, Dave is rarely rude towards other liberals like becky or davidshiffman.
Congratulations on your fine job offers, one thing though: you are no capitalist, greedy marxist is better description don’t you think?

AM
Any faculty member in the US is capable of making millions as long as they actively contribute to their field and demand is there. Hell, my phd advisor made about 400K per year. Sure, base salaries are below 100k, but that is the wage for teaching your two classes per year, or whatever. Faculty that publish, consult and act as good citizens in their respective field do very well, much better than 100K per year, or some pos job in the government. Strangely enough, while I was living in pittsburgh, my neighbor won the nobel prize for economics, and it wasnt Publius.
And I must confess I am occaisionally rude to some liberals
