Obama Tells Us How We’ll Have to Live Our Lives

Written by Sam on May 19th, 2008
“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.”That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.

Oh, is that so? I’ve got news for Mr. Obama. I will drive whatever car I want. I will eat whatever I want and I will heat my house to whatever temperature I desire and I’ll be damned if some two bit, empty suit politician is going to tell me it isn’t going to happen. I don’t care what France thinks about it. It sounds to me like Barack Obama is running to be dictator of a police state, not the president of a free nation, and millions of fools are out there cheering him on.

Can it get any more absurd?

Unreal. It is my mission this week to make sure everyone I know sees this video. He wants to tell me how warm my house can be and what car I can drive. I need my SUV for my family. Period.

If Barack is worried about us using too high a percentage of the world’s energy then he should find a way to PRODUCE MORE OF IT! Radical environmentalism is driving the cost of energy production through the roof and that is why we have so much inflation.

“Radical environmentalism is driving the cost of energy production through the roof and that is why we have so much inflation.”

Yeah, I’m sure China and India and our inefficient, gas-guzzling vehicles have *nothing* to do with the rising cost of energy.

Somehow, I don’t think you need to worry about Obama taking away your SUV. He’s saying we have to be a leader in developing new technologies, right? I just read the news story, not an unedited version of his speech, but it sounds much more like Obama was saying that we can’t expect other countries to take the lead on energy issues when we aren’t making any efforts. Not that he’s going to have state-mandated diets and air temperatures. But if you’d rather be distracted by your own misreadings, go ahead, go out of your way to maintain some sort of unsustainable lifestyle and pretend you’re proving a point.

My lifestyle seems quite sustainable Becky!

Here is what I find amusing about the anti-SUV people….They are soooo angry about the inefficient use of gasoline by these things. Yet, most of these people have no problem stuffing 3+ huge meals per day down their throats. I consider that an inefficient use of food, but do I call for an end to overeating? And what is the real problem in the world? Do starving africans yearn for more gasoline? Is the continent of Africa at arms over gasoline? Or is it food and water?

Its classic “not in my backyard” mentality. Such small minds….

I have no idea who you’re responding to — I’m in favor of efficiency, not a particular make or model of vehicle. There are plenty of hybrid SUV models coming out, and some getting more like 30 miles to the gallon. Growing up in rural Oregon, trust me, I’ve spent my fair share of time in SUVs. As so often happens, your assumptions about what it means to be liberal and/or interested in a sustainable lifestyle are confusing.

I’m also not sure what the “3+ huge meals” is supposed to be responding to. Most liberals are open to seeing how not only transportation choices, but purchases of food/ consumer goods contribute to wider problems… probably why so many progressives are vegetarian or vegan. Also (in response to your questions about Africa): don’t you think there are connections between demands for energy and demands for food?

If being concerned about our own backyards first, and how they impact the ‘backyards’ around the world, is “small minded,” what, exactly, are you proposing in its place? (Besides deciding that your own lifestyle is sustainable, and throwing your hands up in the air because you don’t see a way to change anything?)

Good luck, becky. Fighting the American entitlement mentality can be a lonely business.

“probably why so many progressives are vegetarian or vegan”

No, sadly most veggies think they are making a statement or some type of impact, when in reality they are just depriving their bodies of critical nutrition. Humans were clearly evolved to eat meat, and our biological systems require the minerals and B vitamins in meat for proper function. Guess the libs dont like evolution when it comes to that!
