Interestingly, Neal Boortz is in support of this new law. He bases his support on the following two criteria:
1. If you smoke, you’re an idiot. And the government already hires too many idiots.
2. Government workers are eligible for taxpayer funded health care. Hiring only non-smokers will keep taxes low. Furthermore, smokers are more likely to take sick days and be less efficient at work.
I don’t know where I come down on this; I see a lot of merit in both arguments. I do believe, however, that government employees should be in charge of their own health care. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to be responsible for the poor health decisions of some government cubical-dweller.

I think that is a reasonable perspective. Unless we force the Republican party to make radical change to the way government works, we will need to cut what little bit of fat we can wherever we can.
