Gordon Smith’s Desperate Attempt
Written by Sam on June 24th, 2008Oh Gordo, how pathetic……….
And he has been leading his Democratic opponent since day one too, that’s what I don’t get. He may have just thrown it all away.

I agree. A pathetic ad. And check out his “Guts and Independence” ad, which features two Oregon Democratic officials, and trumpets Smith’s ability “to stand up to George Bush and other Republicans to end this war.” Seems like he took a page out of the Kossacks’ playbook.

I watched this and the “Guts and Independence” ad. I understand that he lives in a more liberal state, but it seems that he’s running a Lincoln Chafee campaign.
Declaring independence and “crossing party lines,” is all great, but seriously, is that all you’ve got?!?
How about an ad defending strives for lower spending, or more limited government, or less taxes? Would that not be as (if not more!) effective, or is Smith’s record not one to tout when it comes to conservative government? I ask, because I have not tracked his voting record.
Besides, given the success of the “surge,” and the more dominant concern of gas prices right now, is this really the smart move to take?

That’s an awful ad. I wonder if he bothered to do any audience testing. The tone is all wrong - at the beginning you can’t even tell if the ad is supposed to be for or against Smith.
I’m sure he’s trying to capitalize on Obama’s popularity in Oregon, but that’s no way to do it. All he’ll do is make his conservative base nervous.

He’ll piss them off and lose the damn election.

Is there even a conservative base of any measurable importance in Oregon? The fact that the Club for Growth could not even get anyone interested in challenging him in the primary leads me to suspect they doubted a sizable one existed too.
The focus of the ads too lead me to suspect that he is playing to the huge environmental movement in the northwest even among Republicans.
