I Love John Stossel

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Because he’s got the gonads to write articles titled, “The Idiocy of Energy Independence.”

And he does bring up a good point that I tell shocked people all the time, that we import more oil from Canada and Mexico (combined) than from Middle Eastern countries (combined).

We live in a global economy and people need to wake up and smell the coffee (probably Cambodian).  Drilling more at home would be great because it would mean more American oil contributing to the world market, and through the market forces of supply and demand this would bring the price down.

America should drill for more oil because it makes economic sense on a global market that we are tapped into, and politicians should not pander to this nationalistic economic idiocy, as Stossel points out.

A Totally Non-PC Description of Democrats

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

From commenter RJD at RedState:

The Democrat Party…

tolerant, inclusive, big tent and open to all (elite whites, atheists, socialists). If you’re of a minority (race, sexual preference, etc.) vote for us, but shut the hell up and don’t rock the boat.

As I said, non-PC… but you can’t say that it isn’t at least partially true.  This is the first comment from an RS post highlighting a DNC page that criticizes all potential McCain veep picks, which for Eric Cantor can’t help but mention that both he and Jack Abramoff are Jewish (I’m not kidding).  Dan McLaughlin, the author of the post, points out:

In fact, in a webpage that runs just 660 words, the word “Jewish” appears five times, which I suppose in some circles is a really devastating indictment of Cantor.

Good catch.  Check out the article, there’s a screenshot and everything.

So why is Lieberman speaking on Monday *BEFORE* primetime?

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Might it be because he’s really speaking in the VP slot on Wednesday?

Giuliani to keynote Republican National Convention

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Not who I would have chosen. If McCain fills the convention with the same speakers we heard four years ago he will send the message that this is still the same Republican party.

There needs to be a major address from someone like Bobby Jindal or Jeff Flake to present a newer, younger, more reform-oriented GOP.

UPDATE: Jindal will be giving a primetime speech on Tuesday. Solid choice. I’d still love to have Jeff Flake in there somewhere.

FURTHER UPDATE: Chuck Todd has an even more complete list of the speakers:

Full list/schedule (Central Time) below:
Overall Theme: Country First
Mon — Service Day
– Split sessions 2:30-6 (this is where the rules, platform etc.. will get voted on, including a new primary calendar etc.) … start again at 7
– Speakers: before prime-time (pre-9pm): Cheney, Lieberman; Primetime: Arnold, Laura Bush, George W. Bush

Tues — Reform Day
– starts 6:30-7
– Speakers: Ridge, Rosario Marin, Thompson, Lingle, Steele; Primetime (9pm central): Palin, Huckabee, the keynoter is Rudy Giuliani.

Wed — Prosperity Day
– starts 6:30
– Speakers pre-prime time: Coleman, Meg Whitman, Fiorina, Romney. Prime time: Cindy McCain leads off, followed by the VP nominee; they will close prime time hour with the McCain nominator: Bobby Jindal… the roll call will take place about 11pm ET… they will roll through.. AZ will pass… AZ will put him over the top… hope to keep within an hour… could go as long as 90 minutes…

Thurs –
– Starts 6:30
– Speakers: Pawlenty, Crist, Brownback, Martinez… In prime time: video of McCain, traditional lead-in to the speech… traditional demonstration… whole prime-time hour, packaged together as McCain’s speech.

I am now mildly optimistic

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

The Latest Reuters/Zogby poll has McCain up by 5 points.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama’s solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

On the important question of the economy McCain opens up to a 9 point lead, 49-40. As Han said to Luke, “Great, kid. Don’t get cocky.” It is still way to early but it is obvious that the McCain camp’s latest advertisements have had a positive affect.

I Thought Ron Paul Was the Savior of Limited Government?!?

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Well, that’s his claim at least… if so, then why is he following Huckabee’s lead and endorsing Don Young in the Republican Congressional Primary in Alaska over true economic conservative Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell?

The Old Boys Club in Washington knows no bounds… even a self-appointed saint such as Rep. Paul is susceptible to it.

H/T to the Club for Growth.
