94 Democrats vote against bailout
Written by Jack Burden on September 29th, 2008Along with 131 Republicans.
Bottom line, this did not fail because Republicans were opposed. It was clear from the beginning that many in the House Republican caucus would vote against.
This failed because more than a third of the Democratic caucus voted against the bill.
It seems clear that Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic leaders intentionally pushed enough Democrats to oppose the bill to ensure its failure, and then blame it on the Republicans. Which is exactly what they’re doing now.

How do you know Pelosi intentionally pushed them to vote no?

Did Pelosi ask the 131 Republicans to vote against it as well?

Dave this bill (which I wanted to fail BTW) failed because Pelosi couldn’t get her own party to vote for it. I wouldn’t be surprised if this led to her resignation at some point in the future. Of course is Steny Hoyer going to rally the troops? I think not.

Mike, the Democrats could have a 100 seat majority and Pelosi could not control it.
If we lived in a parliamentary system, Prime Minister Pelosi would have just lost a vote of confidence and the government would have fallen.

Oh I agree, though the real loss of confidence on this issue has been with Bush if that is even possible. He has been virtually MIA and what has said has been vague platitudes lacking in any knowledge whatsoever.
Right now the markets have no faith that DC can solve this problem.

“Failed because Pelosi couldn’t get her own party to vote for it”.
That seems like a more fair assertion than “Pelosi… intentionally pushed enough Democrats to oppose the bill to ensure it’s failure”.

I agree Pelosi did not tank this vote on purpose. I suspect way too many congressional office phones are ringing off the hook over this scam.

All right, completely unrelated question- how do you guys make a picture appear next to your name on your posts?

Search for “Gravatar” in google and it will take you to the site.

Ryan, I made one and it isn’t working. Do I need to do anything other than make a gravatar linked to this e-mail address?

A time magazine online poll I just looked at shows that 86% of time.com readers say that Republicans are more to blame than Democrats. These polls are far from scientific, but yikes.

Both parties are to blame. They both encouraged subprime lending.
The Republicans will take the brunt since the guy supposedly in power is a Republican.
Yet again the American people simply have no clue. So little of this crisis has to do with government. Most of it has to do with a failure of common sense. If the American people really had spines, they would be publically humiliating their neighbors who helped fuel this fiasco.

That’s nice, Ryan. Ha ha, you’re dumb and because of it you and your family lost your house and savings. You’ll be a real hit at block parties.

I can tell you that is how most people feel in the small town in western PA where I am from.
We need honesty not this lets be nice to everyone attitude. The American people have become emotionally weak. If they do not have the guts to point the finger of blame at their neighbors who caused this mess, they deserve to suffer from the crisis. Nobody is held accountable for their action.

“So little of this crisis has to do with government.”
That is a gross understatement. This problem wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for government policies which encouraged it. You want to blame your neighbors for foolishly taking out mortgages they couldn’t afford right? Fair enough, but who put pressure on the banks and created a regulatory environment in which this was possible in the first place. Without Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac none of this would have happened.
The world will always have stupid people in it, but they needn’t ever be given the opportunity by their government to muck up life for the rest of us.
