Food Aid to North Korea

Written by Mike on June 23rd, 2005

The recent gift of food aid to North Korea shows that the Bush Administration lacks a fundamental understanding of the entire situation in the region. President Bush has failed, after four and half years in office to accomplish anything, make any headway, or even pretend like he understands what is at stake here. Now we are giving them food, with no oversight mechanism in place to ensure that the food is even going to the people who need it and not the army. What we should be doing is blockading other food imports and convincing South Korea and China to do the same. The handling of this entire affair has been pathetic and I am sick and tired of the incompetence being shown. This food aid is propping up the regime enabling it to exist far longer than it should have. If you want to do something humanitarian starve the country to its knees and end the Communist dictatorship that is in power.

Well, Mike, you have to at least admit that it’s a positive step that we’re just buying them off with food now rather than the sweet crude oil Jimmy Carter gave them…..

I worked with a Korean Studies Professor for a while and he told me all the stories about candy sent by school children from South Korea to orphans in the North ending up in the hands of the NK army. I assume all of this food is going to end up in the same place.

Yeah, I am stunned by the lack of knowledge exhibited by the administration. How many times can these guys fuck up on a single issue?

Well, they aren’t as ignorant as a student I heard the other day. He said that we should withdraw all of our troops from Korea, Japan, and the Philippines (where our presence is negligible).

Why should we unilaterally screw over our allies in East Asia? “So we can build schools.” Some people….

I think we should withdraw all of our troops in South Korea to Japan. The South Koreans don’t want our troops there, and they are a bunch of spoiled children who look on the North as a misunderstood “brother”. I say let them defend themselves.

Hey, I read that Bush also trying to stop independent companies from doing business with N. Korea, including shipping them food. This would make N. Korea dependent on the US government for food supplies. Perhaps Bush has been misunderestimated again.
