Boris Johnson has won the race to become the next mayor of London - ending Ken Livingstone’s eight-year reign at City Hall.
The Conservative candidate won with 1,168,738 first and second preference votes, compared with Mr Livingstone’s 1,028,966 on a record turnout.
He paid tribute to Mr Livingstone and appeared to offer him a possible role in his new administration.
Lib Dem Brian Paddick came third and the Greens’ Sian Berry came fourth.
Mr Johnson is expected to stand down as MP for Henley, triggering a by-election.
Not only did the city of London vote for a conservative mayor, but the Tories picked up over 300 seats across England and Wales. Perhaps the British have finally had enough with the Socialist and authoritarian policies of the Labour Party that have sunk that country over the last 10 years and stolen more and more of their freedom away.
This seems to be a trend in Europe as of late. For the past five years we’ve been told about how our image abroad is tarnished, yet Germany elected Merkel, a pro-American conservative. France elected Sarkozy, another pro-American conservative. Italy just turned back to Berlusconi and now England is on track to return power to the Tories.

Having broken the story himself, Drudge lay back and, as usual, left it to the mainstream media to report the details via links on his site to Telegraph.co.uk and other news organisations.
Angry internet users have changed an entry on online encyclopaedia Wikipedia to describe the Drudge Report as an “irresponsible and ill-advised ‘news’ website that has seen fit to put the lives of many soldiers at risk by publishing reports of Prince Harry’s deployment in Afghanistan”.
Not one to reveal much about himself or the way he works, Drudge maintained a stony silence about this, one of his most explosive scoops.
I am an avid reader of the Drudge Report, but I found this to be really distasteful on Drudge’s behalf and disrespectful to Prince Harry’s military service. By breaking the news on Harry’s service in Iraq he put the Prince and the lives of everyone in his unit in danger. I’m all for freedom of the press, but with all freedom comes a responsibility and he crossed the line.

For those of you political junkies out there 18 Dougherty Street, an online video platform in the UK, has an interesting panel on the upcoming By Elections in the UK and how the blogosphere across the pond is making a difference. The two big races are Sedgefield, Tony Blair’s old seat, and Ealing Southall which is a majority minority district that has never elected a Conservative.
